What are dental implants?
Dental implants are specially designed to secure and stabilize your dentures or other dental prostheses, like crowns. Dental implants are metal screw-like posts, typically made from titanium. They act as artificial tooth roots that are surgically fused to your jawbone so they stay in place.
Dr. Chan gently places your dental prosthesis, such as dentures or crowns, comfortably on top of your implants. In some cases, bone grafting is needed for a successful dental implant.
Dental implants can replace a few damaged or missing teeth or an entire set. Different sizes and shapes of dental implants are available.
Who is eligible for dental implants?
You’re eligible for dental implants if you:
- Have good dental health
- Don’t have any health conditions affecting bone healing
- Have a fully-grown jawbone
Dr. Chan can help decide if dental implants are the best choice for you.
Why would I choose dental implants?
You might decide to get dental implants if:
- You have missing teeth
- Your regular dentures become uncomfortable or keep falling out
- You want to improve your speech
Dental implants are also a great way to help prevent bone loss.
How are dental implants placed?
Dr. Chan first administers anesthesia and carefully makes an incision in your gums. She then drills small holes in your jawbone and places your titanium implants in the holes before stitching your incision closed.
Once your dental implants are surgically placed, it can take about 3-6 months for your jawbone and your implants to fuse together successfully. This fusion process is called osseointegration.
After osseointegration, when your jawbone is completely healed, you return to Marina Dental Care and Dr. Chan secures a supporting element called an abutment on top of each dental implant. As the last step, Dr. Chan secures your dental prosthesis to the abutments and ensures you’re happy with your smile makeover.
